did you know that obesity is affecting both adults and children?

1 Oct 13, 07:26 AM, Africa/Lagos

In today’s modern society, weight loss and weight management have become increasingly popular trends. Obesity, affecting both adults and children, has become a major world epidemic. This is supported by the latest survey conducted by the world health organization, which indicates that the obesity rate has steadily increased from 12% of the world’s population to 18% in the last seven years. In developed countries such as the united state, obesity has reached epidemic levels, affecting 70% of people diagnosed with cardiovascular diseases. The cost is phenomenal, 19%of the total cost of treating heart disease is derived from such cases. In addition, obesity contributes to an estimated 80% of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus patients in the US. The figures above show that obesity or being overweight is not merely a cosmetic issue but a serious and life-threatening problem. In many cases, obesity may lead to major health risks such as diabetes, heart disease, certain cancer, stroke, back and joint pains, osteoarthritis, infertility, breathlessness, depression and insomnia, and may cause complications while undergoing medical or surgical operations. How this situation did come about? One of the reasons is that in pursuit of our careers and material gains, we often neglect the essential aspect of our health – our diets. The abundance and availability of fast food is ideal for our hectic lifestyles but we tend to forget that this type of food does more harm than good. Constant intake of fast food leads to a nutrition imbalance, as it is often full of fat that causes weight gain. This in turn leads to an adverse impact on our health. Obesity is indeed a global problem that needs to be addressed. As much as it entails much personal cost to families of overweight individuals, obesity also hurts the economy of nations because it impairs the ability of obese persons to produce and contribute to economic development. The world health organization, expressing concern over the increase in obesity in many parts of the world, warns that obesity increases the risk of disability and death and requires focused prevention and control measures. Countries have developed various strategies and anti-obesity programs to lessen this condition, as well as the health hazards associated with it. The strategies suggested by nutrition experts to prevent obesity is through dietary change, increase in physical activity and behavior modification. To a certain extent, drug treatment and surgical procedures maybe also advised by medical practitioners. Though extensive study and research, however, it has been proven that the best way to reduce weight is through eating less and having proper nutritional diet.WHAT IS OBESITY?Obesity is a condition resulting from excessive storage of fat in the body, usually define as a weight more than 20% above what is considered normal according to a formula know as the body mass index (BMI). Your present weight is largely determined by how you balance your intake of calories from food with the energy you use in everyday activities. if you consume more calories than you use, you gain weight. Your body stores calories that you don't need for energy as fat. Overeating and lack of physical activity are the main causes of obesity, especially in combination. Being overweight puts you at great risk of developing such serious health risks as high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, kidney failure, heart attack and cancer. The human body can support only limited extra fat. While fat is important for storing energy and insulating the body, after a certain point, body fat can begin to interfere with your health, Ultimately, obesity can even be life-threatening.
