Pals, I wish to ask your opinion on what I call "Religious Exploitation". Catholic Church is one of the oldest Christian denominations in the South Eastern Nigeria; but, recently their various tact of draining the pockets of the church members have become unacceptable and unpalatable to alarming proportions. There is this new practice of "Bereaved Family Church Outing and Thanksgiving first Sunday after Burial of Love one". My question is, who invented this practice, why is it necessary and where in the Holy Bible did Christ or his disciples ask us to do this? As expensive as burial is in that part of Nigeria, the church still mandates bereaved families to bring the fattest cows, cattle, goat, yam, plantain etc for thanksgiving. What actually are people expected to be thankful for after burial of love? On many such occasions, those families would invite friends and relatives to accompany them to church. Then the priests of the churches would obtain the names of all church visitors who came for the occasion and hand them to the MC (yes, master of ceremony hired for the outing service) as proper exploitation mechanism. Then MC will start calling those bereaved and their guests one by one, chanting their names to unearth the last Naira in their possession. What do you all think of this practice? Is it a good practice or exploitation via church and faith?
