Brief History on Old Umuahia

The old umuahia Autonomous community in umuahia local government Area of Abia State, Nigeria, comprises seven ancient villages,

Name:- umuled, umuezeala, umuecheokwu, umuobutu, umuovo, okwu and amuzuta.

From the past, those villages comes together as one unit in order to enhance their security, maintain their social and cultural order, and to promote their general welfare and sustain their territarial intergrity.

The name UMUAHIA, was adopted from an (offsprings of weaver birds called AHIA), in admiration of the birds manifestation of the power in unity. Today UMUAHIA is commonly called old umuahia.

The ancestors representing the seven villages always met at a central place called (OZUZU_ OHA) now known as “AFOIBEJ MARKET” to legislate and order the affaire of the community. This ancient union and government has survived to date, thus, the social and cultural norms landed down through the ages have been successfully maintained from one generation to the another.

So the union remained and thived inviolent, indivisible and invincible until the advent of the British when through records in the colonial office in London, (gleaned from the earliest portuguese slave dealers on the IMO-OPOBO-Bonny, and the Bende- Arochukwu-Cross River axises) and later traced down by British Expenditionary forces, the British Colonial Admistration was established their in UMUAHIA to eventually superced the rural native administration.

Now , operating from this umuahia community as its headquaters in the canpain against slave trade and the subsequent colonization of the people, the sorrounding communities comprising of Ayaba, Ntigha,Nsulu, Ubakala, Olokoro,Ibeku, Ohuhu, Umuopara, Oboro, Ibere, Oloko, Ariam, etc were administered from this place under the name UMUAHIA.

As the administration was being expanded and steamlined, and in order to cope with the fledging commercial activities it became necessary to shift the administration post to a more spaciouse site some four (4) kilomitres away at Ala-Ocha on Ibeku land. There, the new area was also called “UMUAHIA”.

It also become nacessary to defferentiate the new administrative post from the old one. There the word “OLD” was prefixed to umuahia.

Hence we have old umuahia as it commonly called today because UMUAHIA today reffers to all Ibeku, Ohuhu, Olokoro, Ubakala, etc
