the great spirite placed me and mypeople on this poor land and naked, when the white men came we gave them lands, and did not hurt them but the white men drove us back and took our lands then the greatfather made us many promise, but they are not kept, he promise to give us large presents, and when they came to us they were small.

compromise used to mean that half a loaf was better than no bread, among modern state men it seems to mean that hafl a loaf is better than a whole loaf.
