the difference between hope and expectation

-Expectation is an attitude associated with the future where one hopes that something will happen
To expect something means that there is a strong possibility, even a certainty that the event is going to happen. Just to hope so has no feeling of certainty at all, it is only a pie-in-the-sky dream.
To explain in further details
There is a huge difference between expecting something to happen and hoping for it to happen. When you think about it, when people hope for something, it seems like they are out of it's control and that something outside themselves will make it happen - some sort of divine intervention. Hope generally leads to a "fingers crossed" situation where all eyes are on Lady Luck to deliver the goods.
Now on the other hand, expectation is a much more active mindset. If you expect something to happen, more often than not, you are willing to take some action to get it completed. You are in control and directly influencing the outcome. You have a stronger belief about it's completion and are willing to take the necessary steps to make it real
