7 Fascinating Facts About Ibadan Beyond Its Iconic Brown Roofs

When you hear the name “Ibadan,” what immediately springs to mind is the image of the city’s iconic ‘brown roofs.’ It’s a fitting association, considering the numerous houses in the Ibadan metropolis adorned with this distinctive feature. However, there is so much more to this capital city of Oyo State, located in southwestern Nigeria, than meets the eye.

Prepare to be captivated as we uncover seven quick but enthralling facts about Ibadan that will undoubtedly reshape your perception of this extraordinary city.

Home to the first skyscraper in Nigeria

Standing tall as a testament to Ibadan’s architectural prowess is the awe-inspiring Cocoa House, nestled in the heart of Dugbe. Constructed in July 1964 and commissioned a year later, this monumental building holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s very first skyscraper. Soaring to a height of 105 meters, Cocoa House served as the headquarters for the Oodua Investment Company, jointly owned by all the southwestern states. Remarkably, this towering structure remained the country’s tallest building until 1979.

Home to the First University in Nigeria.

While Nigeria boasts over 200 federal, state, and private universities today, the prestigious University of Ibadan holds the honor of being the nation’s first and foremost university. Established in 1948 as a college of the University of London, it gained full autonomy and university status in 1962. Renowned for its commitment to research and academic excellence, the University of Ibadan has carved an indelible reputation for itself. Additionally, the University College Hospital, Ibadan (UCH), stands as Nigeria’s inaugural teaching hospital.

Rich Media History

Ibadan’s historical influence extends far beyond Nigeria, encompassing the entire African continent. It is here that the first-ever television station in Nigeria, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV), sprang to life in 1959, setting a precedent for broadcasting excellence. Furthermore, Ibadan houses the oldest surviving privately-owned newspaper in Nigeria, The Nigerian Tribune, which was established by the visionary Chief Obafemi Awolowo in 1949.
Notably, the city also played host to Nigeria’s first private television station, Galaxy Television, which commenced full broadcasting in 1994.

Population and Landmass

During Nigeria’s emergence as an independent nation in 1960, Ibadan reigned supreme as the largest and most populous city in the country, holding the distinction of being the second most populous city in Africa, surpassed only by Cairo, Egypt. Encompassing a vast land area of 3,080 square kilometers (1,190 square miles), Ibadan continues to thrive and expand. According to Macrotrends.com, the estimated population of the Ibadan metro area in 2023 is an impressive 3,875,000.

Blessed with Many Beautiful Hills

Beyond its urban landscape, Ibadan is blessed with a plethora of enchanting hills that beckon to tourists and nature enthusiasts alike. From the majestic Bower’s Tower, affectionately known as ‘Oke Aare’ or ‘Layipo,’ to the captivating Mapo Hills, known as ‘Oke Mapo’ in the native Yoruba language, these natural wonders serve as magnets for visitors. Yet, the allure of Ibadan extends beyond its hills, encompassing other tourist attractions such as the Trans-Wonderland amusement park, cultural centers like Mokola, the Agodi Parks and Gardens, and The Palms Mall, among many others.

The Second Fastest-Growing City in Africa

In a testament to its dynamic growth and ever-increasing prominence, Ibadan earned the distinction of being ranked the second fastest-growing city across the entire African continent in 2022, with only Accra, Ghana outpacing its progress. Even the bustling metropolis of Lagos finds itself trailing behind Ibadan in this remarkable advancement, claiming the third position in this pecking order.

Market Hub

Ibadan pulsates with vibrant markets that teem with a plethora of goods and services. These bustling hubs cater to every conceivable need, making it a shopaholic’s paradise. From the renowned Bodija Market and Oja Oba Market to the lively Apete Market, Gbagi Market, Ogunpa Market, Oje Market, and Aleshinloye Market, there is nothing that you won’t find in Ibadan’s diverse and eclectic markets.

Bonus Fact: The name ‘Ibadan’ derives from the Yoruba phrase “Eba Odan,” which translates to ‘by the edge of the meadow.’ Founded in 1829 as a war camp for warriors from Ife, Oyo, and Ijebu, this historical tidbit adds yet another layer to the city’s captivating narrative.

Now that you’ve delved into these remarkable facts about Ibadan, we’d love to hear from you. What captivates you the most about this vibrant city? Share your thoughts in the comment section below and join in the celebration of Ibadan’s rich heritage.

Transcript from KennisFM Chat (begins 5 minutes into audio)

PRAISE GOD
intro;
When you say Kennis you think Music. 104.1FM
Kennis104.1FM your number 1 music station, and it's the station you're tuned into. Bukky is my name, thank you for joining us on this evening Drive Time show here on your number 1 music station. It's 4.30, just exactly 4.30, but l have some friends in the house and we are going to be having a conversation on entrepreneurship generally, good luck for you to be on the show. So l have with me in the house today, Dr. Patrick Omoyeni, He's the Operations Manager of Palmadex Group.
Good evening
Dr. Patrick; Good evening.
How are you doing?
Dr. Patrick; Thank you, I'm fine.
And I also have with me Nnenne Azubuike, and she's the Business Development Head of Palmadex Group. It's nice to meet you.
Nnenne Azubuike {NA}; same here, good evening.
Going straight, what is Palmadex Group all about generally? Let's reintroduce for some persons who don't have an idea but is listening
Dr. Patrick: Thanks so much, Palmadex Global Integrated Services is a top exporting organization of agricultural products and raw materials
Our head office is in Lagos, and we have been doing this for over 7 years. We are into export generally, export of agricultural products and raw materials. We do export consultancy;
We are an international business. We are also into wood processing. That's basically what Palmadex is all about.
Basically you're into importing and exporting of products. Is there a particular product for people to know.
Dr. Patrick; well, we are an international business talking to Nigerians, we want to market our export academy, where we put people through what you need to know about export. People get to know, what are the benefits. We understand that Nigeria's economy needs Forex. So if you're into export, you get Forex. You're going to be exporting your products out and your clients can pay in Forex.
You know, we are the top hibiscus exporting organization in Nigeria. So this is one of our key products that we export from Nigeria,
I never knew we do anything like that in Nigeria, that's like rare and new,
Dr. Patrick: Not really,
How long has this been for?
Dr. Patrick; Of course, people have been exporting hibiscus for many years. Currently, Nigeria is top country people prefer to buy from, because Nigeria produces the best quality of hibiscus. Our Business Manager can chip in other information.
As the business development manager, what would you like to let us know? (Nnenne)
NA; Palmadex is known for exporting top quality products. Our watchword is quality. What we do is to ensure that only the best is lifted out of Nigeria.
On getting to the international market, our exports are the top on the international market. So in respect to what Dr. Patrick mentioned about hibiscus, Nigeria is one of the main exporting countries for hibiscus flower. Because of the quality of the products, Palmadex happens to be one of the main exporters in Nigeria. Regarding the academy he has mentioned, if you're interested in Export business, and really don't know how to go about it, Palmadex Export Academy is there for you to ensure that you know all the nitty gritty that comes with the business.
I'm actually aware that you guys can actually connect business partners, let's say somebody is trying to export from here, and then someone is trying to import from another country, you can link these people together. How do you go about that? What's the success story so far?
Dr. P: we have many testimonials from graduates of our export academy, because the opportunity available to Nigeria, people are really interested in buying from Nigeria. The only thing is you need to position yourself, to have the requisite knowledge of the business which after getting it, you need to know how do l get buyers. When you come to our export academy we'll put you through on how to get buyers.
I'm really so happy about that, so this is shifting towards a conversation about the academy right now. This academy, is it something that is open to everybody. Is it more like a school-school kind of thing.
NA: The academy comes in 2 main forms, the in-person training and we have the online training. The in person training holds for just 2 days, total of 16 hours, you'll be taught from the beginning of export, and you're entitled to 6 months of mentorship after your training, and then we expose you to some few tips after your training. So the in person and the online training.
The trainings, is there like a specific time or particular day of the week or month the trainings get to happen?
NA; We hold trainings twice a month, and two days. So depending on the time of our applicants registration, we slot them into the training.
So definitely, knowledge here is not free I want to believe
Dr. P: Yea, sure,
So this comes at what cost to anybody listening right now and that would love to be a part of it.
NA: The training goes for a hundred thousand per person and applications fee is 5 thousand, so if you're coming as a group, say a group of 5 or 10, we can give you some discounts.
For those who will be attending the academy, does it have to do with exporting of any business, because your organization is focused on non oil- anything apart from oil,
Dr. P: we train people on non oil export, just export, and non oil export has to do with agricultural products and raw materials. So people want to learn about mineral resources and solid minerals it is not part of what we train people on. We train people on non oil agricultural products and raw materials.
If I may ask, what's like the difference and why just agriculture?
Dr.P; We are very passionate about the environment, so most of the products we export are renewable.
Like hibiscus, people plant hibiscus; there's a season to plant and season to harvest. So it's renewable, we also contribute to the environment. We are very interested in what is very sustainable, what is renewable, at the same time, what can add value to Nigerian economy.
I think everyone is now being concerned about climate change and the green energy I think Palmadex is also focusing on that as well,
Dr. P: yea sure . Cos we are all trying to make sure is that earth is still habitable at the end of the day.
NA; Exactly.
For anyone into export, I know that there's a school for this, what makes this different from other schools that are into training for people. What's the niche for making you standout?
NA; Our export academy, we call it the Benchmark for export training in Nigeria.
We ensure that you grasp all the necessary information you need to export and we coach you, to get to the point where you can actually export by yourself, we don't just sellout knowledge without following up to ensure that you become successful in the business.
You provide mentoring services
Dr. P; yeah means that after training at one point or the other you need a piece of information or want us to guide you on one thing or the other. We are always available.
Do you have like a team of people you with. Like different expert on different product that you're going to attach to each of this or you just have experts that are versed in the knowledge of all these products.
Dr.P; We have the subject matter experts in export, so they understand everything that has to do with non oil export.
So the trainers in the export academy, they also take charge of whatever needs from graduates of our export academy. To provide all the necessary support.
Is there anything you'd like to let us know, I know you're a serial entrepreneur, and there's a number of entrepreneurs who will be listening, is there anything you'd like to tell them based on experiences you must have gathered over the years. What would you say to those entrepreneurs
Dr. P; Of course you're looking for a business that can be profitable to you, export is very okay, I would advise that you venture into export. The reason is because every business has its own challenges but we've been into export over the years and l encourage people to venture into the business, secondly there are many investment opportunities in export, the reason is because when you look at lending opportunities in Nigeria, its not as easy as you can imagine, there are many opportunities flying around in export now but the funding or financing
Yea, somebody right now is saying let's go into export, its money, its money and we know what everything is saying in Nigeria
Dr. P: so export is capital intensive, we know the new government will come in by supporting our people to export
You know financing some of the contracts and opportunities that comes
There were some that passed away because we did not have the financial capacity to execute those contracts
And when you go to bank to say l want to lend money by the time they ask you bring this bring that, timelines would have lapsed, so when you look at it
We are looking forward to seeing opportunities from people that want to venture into export investment
You mentioned earlier that government might be able to lend to young persons looking to start their own businesses
Do you have a website where you get to inform people of such opportunities
Dr. P: our website basically markets just our products, you can always call us and regularly we have many opportunities for businesses. Opportunities to invest, opportunities for partnership. Open for partnerships and investment opportunities.
(@NA:)is there a training that is coming up soon, when, and also if people are trying to reach your organization, how do they do that?
MzNN: Our next training comes up on the 21st -22nd of June 2023, (On-site) for the in person at the academy. The online is always open to the convenience of the trainee.
