Plastic in a nutshell!! I have never liked Jim Carrey the Funnyman. I daresay that I hate the characters he portrays in those movies. I used to think it is because of my utter disdain for slapstick comedy. When I saw him in the Number 23 I realized what my grouse was. That brilliant, wonderful man is a tortured soul. He has spent a lifetime playing the fool in order to get us to like him and the very worst thing happened, it worked. I never liked those roles because on some level I could tell just how much it took for him to keep wearing that idiot smile and how much he hated us for being the reason he did. Jim Carrey is a phenomenal actor and it is a shame he has wasted so much time to get us to see it. I do not think he is a happy person. But I think he’ll get better if he gets to actually act for a change, something he hasn’t gotten much chance to do in his long ‘acting’ career. I’m sure you’re reading this and you’re wondering what this crazy person is talking about today. I’m talking about you. Me. Anyone. Everyone. I’ve been reflecting on how much (or less) we are all like Jim Carrey, going through life; pandering to the expectations of others with the hope of being rewarded with acceptance. I’m wondering aloud about how much of ourselves is truly ‘us’ and how much is just us trying to fit in.
