Man refuels a small generator on a store rooftop at Oshodi Market in Lagos, Nigeria. Nigeria's president announced a multi-billion-dollar plan Thursday to repair and privatize the oil-rich nation's decrepit national power grid that forces people to rely on private generators to provide electricity.Sunday Alamba/AP

Tragedy struck in Mokwa township of Niger State, as five members of a family of eight died after they must have inhaled carbonmonoxide from the generating set in the early hours of Tuesday, October 25, while they were asleep at their residence.

Indication to this effect emerged on Tuesday in Minna, the state capital, as three other members of the family, who were said to have lost consciousness as a result of the incident, were rushed to the Mokwa General Hospital, where there are now receiving treatment.

Nigerian Tribune further gathered that those who lost their lives were the head of the family, his wife and three children.

A reliable source told the Nigerian Tribune that on the fateful night, the family allegedly put on their generating set inside the house, bolted the doors and went to sleep, after which the smoke emission was inhaled by the family, leading to the death of five of them.

The source, who craved anonymity, in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, disclosed further that neighbours were said to have observed that no member of the family came out for the Muslim morning prayer by 5.30 a.m and they did not go out for work at day break.

Nigerian Tribune further learnt that the development allegedly made the neighbours to force the front and back doors of the apartment open.

On entrance, they were shocked to find the three surviving members of the family gasping for breath in the rooms.

“The husband, wife and their three children were found dead in their rooms, while the neighbours raised the alarm, which attracted others,” the source said.

Confirming the incident in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune in his office, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Richard Oguche, said the police were already investigating the circumstances that led to the death of the family members, stating that the initial report indicated that they could have died from inhaling generator fume.
