The Ibadan branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) has recommended psychiatric test for policemen, before they are allowed to carry weapons. NBA said it would help reduce cases of extra-judicial killings by the police. In a statement by its Chairman, Mr. Luqman Laoye, at the weekend, the association urged the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Police and Human Rights to organise an open forum and seek public opinion on how to prevent extra-judicial killings.
It also urged human rights organisations to closely monitor cases of extra judicial killings and ensure the prosecution of perpetrators. The statement reads: “We join other well meaning Nigerians and organisations in condemning the spate of killings by policemen in recent times. “As an interim step to curb the rampant cases of extra-judicial killings by policemen, we suggest that psychiatric tests should be conducted on policemen, especially the rank and file, to determine those that are fit to be entrusted with weapons. Those found to be unworthy should either be weeded out or transferred to positions where they would not constitute threats to the public. “We also call on the Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Police and Human Rights to urgently convene a public/stakeholders’ forum to come up with other suggestions on how to curb this menace.” Home News Columnists Sports Politics Business Editorial Law Arts Health Education Society Saturday Magazine Sunday Magazine News Update Search
