Over 200,000 infected with HIV/AIDS in Borno —Commissioner, Posted by News Updates on October 6, 2011
Written by James Bwala, Maiduguri Thursday, 06 October 2011

Following a health report that over 200,000 people in Borno State are infected with the Human Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (HIV), Acquired Immuno-deficiency Virus (AIDS), the Borno State government is to partner with the World Bank and other international health agencies on reducing the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the state.

According to the state governor, Kashim Shettima, only 50 per cent of the carriers in the state had access to antiretroviral drugs and treatment centres.

Shettima spoke on Wednesday in Maiduguri, while distributing antiretroviral drugs and HIV testing kits to the Ministry of Health at the Borno Medical Store on Baga Road.

He said the rising rate of the prevalence of the HIV/AIDS in the state was causing a lot of concern, as well as the rate at which it was being spread among the various groups of people.

He noted that the scourge was not respective of gender or status in claiming lives and that included children below the age of five.

On the HIV/AIDS current rate of prevalence, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Salamatu Anas-Kolo, said in 2008 that the rate was 4.8 per cent but rose to 5.4 in 2010, stating that the increase was, however, higher and above the national average prevalence rate of less than four per cent.

She said because of the rising prevalence rate, the total number of HIV/AIDS carriers in Borno State had risen to 222,000, stating that out of this, only 50 per cent or 111,000, had access to antiretroviral drugs, treatment and counselling.

According to Dr Salamatu, the none payment of counterpart funding on the control and treatment of HIV/AIDS by the immediate-past administration of Senator Ali Sheriff, had led to a rapid spread of the virus among the people.

Lack of education is the root of "MOST"problems. If only our greedy government will invest in the educational sector to enhance the knowledge of the illiterates. Some of those people don't even know what condom is all about. Some ain't even got a what the virus is. In most of the rural areas, there are no medical facilities. How will they know they've got the virus without medical checkup? When they are ignorant of their conditions, they continue having unprotected sex, giving birth to more children thus spreading the virus. Others have no means of survival even though they are aware of their medical condition. They tend to survive by prostitution. Majority of HIV patient have got no access to drugs or can't even afford it. Shame to our government. All the know is to legalize prostitution.

Lord who will care for these children if the parents are not getting their medications?  People do not have to die like this. With proper healthcare they can live long and productive lives.

I know that people must be accountable for their own actions. However, some officials should be charged with mass murder.  What has happened to the billions of dollars in international aid that they receive from all over the world to help their nations citizens?  Surely God will hold many of them accountable for not educating its citizens.  They will also have to give an account and for not caring for their sick.

We say dem need Education while their own people talk se "Western Education is sin"....what kind of Education do they need?
The truth is, anyone who have been to the North will testify, these guys are way backward in terms of education and enlightenment...

Common Immunization, you go preach tire before dem gree make u immunize their child...Dis one still dey happen till now......

Most of their Governors dey take advantage of their religious belief dey cheat dem......"What has been by GOD destined can't be changed"...dat means dey have been destined to be poor and the rich have been destined to be rich....This is the main reason you will always hear some particular names from generation to generation in Northern Politics....

May GOD help them in JESUS Name, AMEN!!!
