If Gabriel Adeyinka Adedeji had known that his attempt to stop an elderly from being attacked could lead to his own death, probably, he would have kept his mouth shut and keep away.

Akeem, the suspect

As someone brought up in a culture that accords respect for the elderly, 25-year-old Gabriel had thought that an attack on an old man by the duo of Rasaki Iyiola alias Arubo Fesu (He who makes sacrifice to the devil) and Shakor Akeem was not right and he tried to point this out to them.

Gabriel was in front of his house at Olokoyo area, Iseyin town in Oke Ogun area of Oyo State on Friday, February 11, where Rasaki and Shakor had gone to attend the burial ceremony of the mother of their friend, one Ganiyu Sulaiman, and were on their out of the venue of the ceremony when the fracas reportedly started around 10.30p.m.

A version also had it that there was an argument on the payment for recharge cards bought by Rasaki and Gabriel had quietly told those involved that they should allow Rasaki to go because he was allegedly a known drunkard and hemp smoker.

This statement reportedly infuriated Rasaki and Shakor who felt Gabriel had no justification to put his mouth into what was none of his business. They were alleged to have turned the heat on Gabriel and the little altercation soon led to fight and each group's supporters joined, including a friend of Rasaki and Shakor who was at the party with them, Akeem Ahmed.

Akeem himself had a bottle smashed on his head and before those who witnessed the fight knew what was happening, Gabriel had been stabbed in the neck, the injury from which he died almost immediately. Once it dawned on them that their action had resulted in the loss of a life, the duo and their supporters took to their heels.

However, policemen from Iseyin division were able to arrest Akeem while Rasaki, Shakor and others are currently at large. The case was transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, Ibadan, where the Officer-in Charge, Martin Mbajunwa, a Superintendent of Police, and his men are still investigating the case while a search is still on for the fleeing suspects.

Speaking with Saturday Tribune at SCID, Akeem Ahmed, a 25-year old father of two, said he knew nothing about the death of the deceased.

According to Akeem, who is also a cloth weaver from Afaaji family in Iseyin, on the fateful Friday, he went to a burial ceremony at Olokoyo area of Iseyin. "I was invited along with two of my friends by one of the children of the deceased who is a friend. As we were about leaving the venue of the event, I stood with my friend, the celebrant, discussing, while my two friends were already moving ahead.

"As I left my friend and made to join my two friends, I met them already fighting with some people. I ran to them to ask what was happening but no one answered me. They just went on fighting.

"I could not move too near because of the injury I had on my hand. I had an accident which resulted in the fracture of the bone of my left arm and the bone was yet to be set because of the wound that I also sustained. The bone setter was treating the wound to get it healed after which he would have put the arm in a cast.

"This made it impossible for me to attempt to separate them, so I had to leave the place to inform a man who is like a brother to me that my friends were fighting so that he could come and pacify those involved in the fight. The man's name is Afeez, popularly called Omo Alhaja. I know him as a member of Oodua People's Congress. Immediately, he picked a motorcycle and followed me. By the time we got there, we saw bottles broken all over the place with both sides sustaining injuries from stabbing.

"As we made to separate them, one of those involved in the fight just smashed a bottle on my forehead and I was drenched with blood immediately. When the man I went to call saw this, he could no longer stay back to separate the warring parties. He quickly took me away from the scene to the hospital for medical treatment. My forehead was stitched there and I was making my way back to the brother's house when he called me to inform me that the person stabbed by my friends had died. I arrived his house and he asked me to sit. He further told me that his name was being touted as the one who came to foment trouble in the area where the fight took place. I was in his house when the police came to arrest me.

"I was not involved in the fight in any way but I cannot deny that I know the people involved because they were my friends and we were at the party together. Immediately the police arrested me, I told them that we should go the suspects' parents' house to know their whereabouts as I learnt they fled the scene when they saw things took a dangerous turn," Ahmed narrated.

It was gathered that Rasaki is known in the town as a herbalist and perceived as a notorious man.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, Olatunji Ajimuda, a Superintendent of Police, told Saturday Tribune that the suspect would be charged to court, while the search continues on those on the run, saying that sanctity of human lives should be respected and people should exercise restraint even when provoked so that they would not contravene established laws of the land.

Well! my take is that, d fact that the culprits were his friends or dat he was present when d fight took place does'nt mean he should be responsible for wat has happened.
the police/court shld set d poor boy free....
