Senator Teslim Folarin: From Senator To Prisoner

THE Senate Leader, Senator Teslim Folarin, and three others were, on Tuesday, remanded in Agodi Prisons by a Magistrates’ Court, Iyaganku, Ibadan, Oyo State, over the alleged murder

of the factional leader of the proscribed National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Abdul Lateef Salako, a.k.a. Eleweomo, last Thursday.

Others arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder were suspected supporters of the senator. They were Jaiyeola Bankole, Olaide Raji and Kazeem Ismaila.

The charges read that the four suspects and others, still at large, had, on December 30, 2010 conspired to commit felony and that the suspects had, on the same date at Ogbere area under jurisdiction of the court, committed murder by shooting the victim, Eleweomo, to death, thereby committing murder.

After the charge was read, counsel for the accused, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), who led nine other lawyers, had informed the court that it (the court) lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.

He said as a result of the charges against the suspects, it ought to have been handled by the state High Court.

He, therefore, urged the court to remand the suspects at the Agodi Prisons till further hearing in the case,
The Magistrate, Alhaja F.A. Badrudeen, having agreed with the defence counsel, therefore ruled that the suspect be remanded in prison custody and adjourned hearing in the case till January 14, 2011.

The Senate Leader, dressed in white brocade Buba and Sokoto, was driven to the court premises amidst tight security in a green Peugeot 406  saloon car.

He was cheered into the court by hundreds of his supporters, who had been keeping vigil at the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Iyaganku, since Monday, when he was arrested.

Prominent among his supporters who were at the court were the leader of the coalition of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Senator Lekan Balogun; former Coordinator of the Akala/Yar’Adua Campaign Organisation,  Yemi Aderibigbe; former chairman of Ibadan South-West Local Government Area, Honourable Ademola Ige; former Secretary to the State Government, Chief Sharafa Alli; Alhaji Yekini Adeojo and all the suspended lawmakers in the state House of Assembly.

Speaking with newsmen after the court sitting, defence counsel, Akeredolu, who claimed that he was not part of the arraignment, disclosed that the accused might not stay till January 14, as they would have to approach the High Court for alleged abuse of withholding charges.

He said the defence could not object to the suspects being arraigned at the magistrates’ court, adding that they would prefer the suspects being detained at the Agodi Prisons instead of staying at the police cell.

The former coordinator of the Akala/Yar’Adua Campaign Organisation, Aderibigbe, also said that the Senate leader would soon be vindicated, as he described the trial as political intimidation.

Also, addressing newsmen, Senator Balogun, who described the trial of the Senate leader as a political vendetta, said there were many crimes in the state that were yet to be investigated by the state police command.

Balogun, who disclosed that Senator Folarin did not see the victim, wondered how a charge could  be brought against him when he was not there when the incident happened.

He identified an alleged assassination attempt on his life by unknown persons and the attack on members of the state House of Assembly as some of the cases the state Commissioner of Police, Baba Adisa Bolanta, was yet to investigate.

He disclosed that the people of Ibadan would, on January 15, hold a rally that would call for the removal of the police boss from the state, saying “Bolanta should leave the state and allow the people to live in peace.”

folarin has made a very very stupid and costly mistake , in Nigeria politics there are 2 people you don't argue with , the governor and the president , they can do and undo , now i wont be surprise if bolanta brings up some people and they say that they were hired by folarin to kill eleweomo. he was warned alongside ladoja to leave the party ticket for the governor , ladoja was smart enough to leave the party for akala , now i ca n be sure that he will spend the whole election period in jail because they will be postponing the case and dont forget akala was a former police officer ,a croked one according to stories but not founded so he know the ropes very well no wonder adeojo wept uncontrollable when he realized that folarin was being taking to agodi prison and remand he has already being convicte according to akala rules cos he is in akala state and the crime was committed in his state
