Residents of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, were yesterday gripped by fear of the unknown as reports of another bomb explosion spread mid-day. The incident was said to have occurred at the Bayelsa State Government liaison office christened Ezon-Ware, located at the Shehu Shagari Way in the central area of the metropolis.
Daily Sun checks at the purported scene of the incident, however, showed that there was neither a blast nor any untoward occurrence that triggered pandemonium within the area. Bayelsa State government officials and other workers at the magnificent complex, which also houses a commercial guest house operated by the state government were shocked at the sight of a battery of reporters who thronged the scene to confirm the incident.
There was, however, a mild drama as about three of the lodgers who had checked into the guest house a day earlier, scampered into their chalets and attempted to move out of the complex on realising the reporters’ mission but were promptly dissuaded by the management who dismissed reports on the incident as false.
Traffic wardens and newspaper vendors within the vicinity also said they were not aware of any incident. Later in the evening, there were speculations that the explosion might have occurred at the Bayelsa Governor’s Lodge at the highbrow Asokoro District of Abuja, a report dismissed as a hoax by the State Security Service (SSS) and the police. The Bayelsa State government also said it was not aware of the incident.
SSS Assistant Director in charge of Information, Mrs. Marilyn Ogar, said the Service was not aware of the incident, a position echoed by the Federal Capital Territory police spokesman, Superintendent Moshood Jimoh. In his reaction, the police Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Yemi Ajayi, emphatically dismissed the reports as false.
Also contacted over the issue, Bayelsa State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Nathan Egba, said the government was not aware of such incident. “I am not aware of anything of such. This morning, I received calls from some persons just as you’ve done, and I sent people in Abuja to go to the Izon-Ware and find out what happened. They reported back to me that there was nothing. I also called the SSG [Secretary to the State Government], who also told me he is not aware. Again, even if it had happened at the Governor’s Lodge, at least, we would have known by now. So, it is not true”, he told Daily Sun yesterday on telephone.
