The Nigeria Police has banned checkpoints across the country following several fatal accidents caused by the checkpoints mounted by the police.
P.M.NEWS gathered that the directive to that effect was given over the weekend by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, who ordered that police commissioners in all the 36 states of the federation must implement the order immediately.

In response to the directive, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo, went on air to announce the directive, ordering all policemen in his command to leave the checkpoints immediately.
A police source in Lagos told P.M.NEWS under confidentiality that all area commands and divisional police officers have been directed to ensure that the order is carried out at all their duty posts.
As at this morning, P.M.NEWS discovered that the most checkpoints often mounted early in the morning to extort money from motorists in Lagos had disappeared.
Only traffic wardens and LASTMA officials were seen controlling traffic.
There was a multiple accident at Isheri area of Lagos State where over 30 people were burnt to death at police checkpoint.

I thank you Oga ( I. G. P) for this step towards the Nigerin police force I think this is an achievement in the Nigerian police force because those men in uniform were disgrace to the Nigerian force in general . Some of them were even worst than the criminals they were asked to check at their checkpoints. Thank you Sir for this banned you have done so great God Bless you.

We have heard this many times, but such directives are hardly carried out..........
But then, in as much as I am against the nefarious activities of some officers under the guise of check-points, I still think we need these check points in some areas as such stop-and-search exercises have produced good results..........

Banning check points? No they should have been asked to mount it on dangerous roads especially places that are bad to travellers at night or quiet places were robbers always use to mount road blocks.

They should have placed a restriction on movement of heavy duty vehicles that usually cause accidents on roads and regulate the points where checking should be done on roads instead of outright ban on checkpoints. I believe these checkpoints still have their advantages.

Check points should not be banned however the time when it is being done should be look at. Check points help to catch criminals and also allow persons to know that LAW and ORDER is still being maintain. What the Commissioner should do is put the Policemen and women whose integrity are not being question at these Check Points. Never allow the same persons at the same Check Points to avoid familiarity. When I was working with the Police Force here in Jamaica has a civilian Office Manager this is what was being done after there were cries of Extortion. Hugs

That is not a better solution! ofcourse the very reasons checkpoints were mounted for would still call back for its re-implementation... well, at least Nigerian citizens and abodes would rest for a while from all those "Illitrate and Hungry Policemen" who exploit the people instead of protecting them! imao
