At least 10 local builders were buried alive yesterday in a village outside Kano city when the pit they were digging caved in on them.
More victims are said to be trapped inside the pit.
“We have so far dug out 10 bodies from the collapsed pit and our men and volunteers are still searching for more bodies. We believe there are more bodies buried in the pit,” Kassim Musa, spokesman for Kano State fire service, said.
The accident occurred in Lajawa, a farming village 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of Kano, when the pit caved in on the local builders who were digging sand from the pit for making mud bricks, Musa told AFP by phone from the scene.
“It is difficult to say what caused the accident or how many people were in the pit when it caved in,” he said.
He did not give details on the depth of the pit.
“We may have to conduct a headcount of the people in the village to determine how many people are missing to give us an idea of those buried in the pit,” Musa addded.
He said it was unlikely any of the trapped builders would be found alive.
