ABUJA—A sixteen year Miss Edem Ekpoawan Irene, yesterday emerged the highest scorer with 310 points in the 2009/10 Universities Matriculations Examinations (UME) conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB).

Miss Edem, who hails from Cross River State, and applied to study Communications with option at the ABTI University, Yola, Adamawa State was closely followed by a 23 year Master Igugu Friday Obukohwo who scored 308 points. Obukohwo, who hails from Delta State, also applied to read Industrial Relations & Personnel Management at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Miss Odinde Henrietta Konye, aged 18, from Delta State emerged third. She applied to study Economics at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board had conducted the Universities Matriculation Examinations (UME) exams and released the result six day after, beating the records of last year, which it released two weeks after its conduct.

The Board shifted the formal date for the release of the results from Thursday last week to Tuesday (yesterday) due to Easter celebration.

Announcing the release of the results at a press conference in Abuja, Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, noted that a total of 548, 543 candidates scored 200 marks and above.

According to him, the Board recorded 23, 819 cases of examination malpractices, which he said represents 2.07% of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination. He further declared that, “this also shows reduction in the cases of malpractices when compared with last year’s figure of 2.24 %.

Prof. Ojerinde who said the Board is yet to take a decision on who to deal with those involved in the exam cheats, however, announced that a committee has been set up to look into the various cases of the malpractices with a view to come up with a measure on how to deal with the situation.

On the prisoners enrolment, Prof. Ojerinde said, “as part of the Board’s efforts to reach out and avail the citizenry with the opportunity to further their education no matter their situation, the 2009 Universities Matriculation Examination was conducted at the Ikoyi and Kaduna prisons for eligible inmates who had indicated interest in the examination.

He said a total of 46 inmates sat for the examination, which include 13 in Ikoyi and 33 in Kaduna prisons respectively.

The Register explained that a total of 667, 771 applicants who sat for the 2009 examination are male while 514, 610 candidates are female.

Prof. Ojerinde, who dispelled insinuation over the scrapping of the Boards following the creation of the proposed Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), said the Board would conduct the UTME exams expected to take off next year.

According to him, “the Boards Matriculation Examinations are not scrapped as was erroneously reported in some newspapers, rather the idea is to have a single examination for all tertiary institutions which gives candidates wider choice of institutions and this will invariable enhance their chances of securing admission into tertiary institutions”.

The general entry requirements to all the institutions, he said will be the same five credit passes at Secondary school Certificate Examination (SSCE while the entry qualification will be determined by individual institutions”.

Maybe JAMB should re-test the top 3. I doubt their age is good enough to stand the pressure of reading to score the highest.

Trust me, not in Nigeria. No matter the home tutor or shit they claim to go through, there is some scam behind her score.
