Until two weeks ago that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar ordered that the former divisional police officer in charge of Pen Cinema Police Station, Mr. Segun Fabunmi, who allegedly shot dead one Abiodun Ademola be put into the cell, the killer-DPO was treated like a king.

We authoritatively gathered that following investigation by IGP that the DPO was not in the cell at the state Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Panti, Yaba, Lagos, he ordered that the man should be put inside the cell.

investigation showed that the man had actually been enjoying VIP treatment. Fabunmi was alleged to have shot into a crowd of youths playing football at the Yaya Abatan area of Ogba during the January protest against the removal of fuel subsidy. The fatal shot sent one Abiodun Ademola to his early grave while four others sustained various degrees of injury.

The then state Commissioner of Police, Yakubu Alkali ordered his arrest and handed him over to the Homicide section of SCID. A senior police officer at the SCID said that the police had concluded their investigation but were waiting for the Police Service Commission to decide the fate of the DPO.

The police source said as a senior police officer, the IGP or the commissioner of police had no power to dismiss him except the Police Service Commission. He said the police had done their bit by investigating and submitting their findings to the commission.

The police source further revealed that the DPO actually enjoyed VIP treatment as he was given the privilege to sleep in some of the offices of senior officers at the SCID. He said the DPO had the freedom of seeing his family members, eating and drinking anything of his choice unlike others facing murder investigation. According to him, until two weeks ago, that Abubakar ordered that he should not be given VIP treatment he was living like a king.

When contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, corroborated the claim that, he had no right to dismiss the officers. Manko said police had concluded investigation into the matter and he had got the DPP advice to try him.

He said police had nothing to hide on the issue, debunking the claim that the man was enjoying VIP treatment. He said: “We don’t spare our own when they err. We treat them according to the offence they committed. The DPO is still in our custody at the SCID.

We cannot defend any of our officers who used his fire arms wrongly because the officers knows when to use the fire arms as the rules are clearly stated in the Police Order Act.
