A 40-day-old marriage collapsed on Monday, in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, as a housewife, identified as Mrs Tina Eku-Joshua, stabbed herself to death.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the tragedy, which occurred at Sabon-Pegi area of Shabu, in Lafia North Development Area of the state, around noon, had thrown the entire community into mourning, as sympathisers continued to gather at the deceased’s house to commiserate with the family, even as they wondered the circumstances that led to the suicide.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Cornelious Ocholi, who confirmed the incident on phone to the Nigerian Tribune, urged the public not to allow their predicaments to influence their lives or weigh them down.
No suicidal note or message was found as of the time of filing this report.
One of the sisters to the deceased's husband, Akimi Yamusa, said in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune that the late Eku was sound and healthy before she committed suicide, pointing out that she locked herself up in a bathroom before committing act.
According to her, “when I enter the compound, she was not at home. I asked her husband, who said she had gone out. Shortly, she returned and we greeted and she told us that she wanted to have her bath. The deceased secretly went to the bathroom with a knife and used it to stab herself on the stomach.''
Another younger sister to the deceased, who only gave her name as Abigail, said in an emotion-laden voice that she was asleep when Yamusa woke her, while crying and asked her to come and see her sister.
“On reaching the bathroom, I saw my sister lying down with a knife inside her stomach. Part of her intestines came out and it was full of blood. My sister got married to his husband just last month, April 12, 2012. I wonder what should be behind this kind of devilish acts,” she said.
