About me

Dee Splash describes her own music as fun and youthful while at the same time signifying deep meaning. Afro music is about stories. Some of those stories can be meaningful and still be fun. I never choose a song that I cant relate to in some way, shape, or form. My music will always reflect who I am. Just as straight ahead is her attitude to that of her music. A lyrical poetess of the first order and leader in the afro-pop movement, Dee Splash lays it on the line, no-holds-barred: "I don't go for the just any and anything. What I do is music - no frills added." The international record-buying public found that out, when they turned Dee Splashs 2010 debut single Aiye n be Leko meaning theres life in Lagos into a critically acclaimed Nigeria and UK seller, spurred by the success of her brand. That Dee Splash would continue to keep it real was without question: what the eager audience she created discovered was that this multi-talented singer, songwriter, musician's last work, LOOSE CONTROL which is set to be even deeper lyrically than its much-loved predecessor. The song titles tell it all: "Loose Control," which like many of the other tunes on the album, is based on Dee Splashs experiences in life, love and most importantly this music was done in times when you might be so stressed and it is here to lift up your spirit; and "Aiye n be Leko," the first single, a positive, uplifting anthem that lauds the strengths and qualities of the blacks and addressing the fact that youths in the Diaspora should always remember to come back home to contribute in the daily activities of their country.. "I was reaching out for a certain freedom of self-expression on my new single. I went into making it with the attitude that it would be better than my first single, that it would still have the sensibilities of the old and the young but with more of a street edge," says Dee Splash. Working with producer Olly Jay, Dee Splash masterminded the direction for a pop and RnB feel to her music: "It was about setting the tone for whatever I wanted the album to be. I worked with some great people but my thing is, whenever I work together, you have to understand where I'm coming from. Whatever you're doing production-wise has to coincide with what I'm saying musically and lyrically." And having worked with Olly Jay for 5years now he knew exactly what I like to hear and working with him has being an absolute fun. Drawing on the influences of the likes of Mary jay, Beyounce - two of the artists who inspired her during her formative years - Where Dee Splash has come from is a tradition of great gospel-rooted singing and music-making and where she finds herself now is on the cutting edge of inspired creativity: " There's a natural high, a rush of adrenalin that I get when I'm writing and recording" Getting to the place where she could experience the range of her creative skills took a moment for the Nigerian, UK born songstress. Hailing from a musical family ("my mother performed and preached in a local gospel quartet"), Dee Splash was exposed to great gospel groups and joined the choir of the Grays Choir Church during her days in high school "when I was knee-high to a duck's tail. I've been singing ever since." Whilst being in the London, she obtained a Diploma Degree in Built Environment from Lewisham College, London and then proceeded to London South Bank University, (LSBU) where she obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Technology. Dee Splash first shot into the limelight was in 2002, at the Miss Nigeria UK beauty contest, where she emerged as the third runner-up. She also took part in a dance reality television show called Bump n Grind UK 2003 and it was a success. Listening to R&B legends like Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Hathaway, Gaye and Mayfield and performing their songs in the mirror in her bedroom, a teenaged Dee Splash was destined to pursue a career in music She has had collaboration with Misturr Montana, Eva, Sunky, GFlow Baba and has turned out a great success. "I had been preparing for years and by the time "Aiye n be Leko" started to take off hit, I was ready for the world," she recalls. "It took me a long time to get excited about what was happening. I worked very hard and I felt comfort in a spiritual way once people started getting into my music. I was grateful to God for the blessings and," she says, "when I started being recognised for my work that was a turning point. Love, indeed, and a whole lot of blood, sweat and tears. The result is an amazing album that reinforces Dee Splash's emergence as a one-of-a-kind, passionate, honest and remarkable artist who is carving her own niche in the world of Afro-beat music. Arent no doubt, in the realm of new millennium female artist in Nigeria, Dee Splash is the real thing and her album will be a must have for any musical collection.
