Mazi Okolo's first wife has two daughters, and was unable to bear a male child, and since he is desirous of a male child that will succeed him, he took a second wife, who gave him a son. And because his second wife bore him a son, he tend to favor her and her kids. This perceived act of favoritism towards the second wife, and her children, pushed Nneka to take a stand to protect the rights of her mother and sister in Mazi Okolo compound. She becomes the male child her mother never had.
