How to effectively Advertise your business for FREE!!!

22 Feb 11, 05:30 PM, Africa/Lagos

Ok guys its the 2nd month of the year so Ann will ask "Are half way through your First quarter targets for 2011". Now I do hope your answer to that is YES.

If it isnt dont stress im always here to help

As a small business you will recognise the need to promote your business.

With a bit of creativity and some work on your part there are a number of ways to advertise your business for free.

Many local businesses struggle to find ways to promote themselves, get links, rank in search engines, and ultimately drive traffic to their websites. Most small businesses also have limited budgets making the task more difficult. Have a look at these suggestions and feel free to contact me if you need more help.

1. Write a press release

Doing something newsworthy? If you are you can always submit a press release. Writing a press release is the best way to generate some free publicity. Basically, most journalists do not have much time to write stories, so if you can provide them with easily written text it becomes quite easy for them to publish it. But be careful and don’t presume that your story will be interesting. The fact that you sell a product is not very interesting. Interesting stories are more likely to be human interest, or about a new business opening. Look inside a publication to see what sorts of stories that they publish and write your press release like one of these.

2. Social Networking

Join social networking sites such as LinkedIn, Ecademy, Friends Reunited, and Facebook. Add personal profiles of yourself and your business on these. You will need to be quite subtle – avoid the hard sell. Then start building links in and get connected with people you know and make connections with people you don’t through introductions.

3. Use your car window, Flyers and under windshield wipers:

Make a poster and put it in the back window of your car. This could be just a simple web address for your business. If you need to reach the drivers of pickup trucks, what better way than to descend on parking lots with flyers to put under windshield wipers? Yes, they may get run out of the mall parking lot by that security guard in the golf cart, and don't be surprised if some lonely soul with nothing better to do calls you to complain, but the results are definitely worth it.

4. Have an active online presence:

Add comments at the bottom of web postings If you do a reasonable job of an answer then many sites will be quite happy to include a link back to your website. If you are promoting an event or artiste check our online ticket and promotions site. We list your event for free and sell tickets on your behalf.

5.Update your website. Take a look at your website and see if it is the best that it can be. Pay special attention to your homepage and keywords. Look to the overall appearance, the professionalism of your wording, the explanations explaining the benefits you provide, etc. In fact, everything in your site needs to convince a client to work with you. Now ask yourself, does it do that? Is this something I can be proud of? Too often we throw together a website, just to have it done. Remember this can often be a client’s first impression of you. Is it selling you well?

5. Start blogging: Create a blogsite this can help you gain exposure, visitors, readers, and subscribers to your newsletters. It can be a bit time consuming, but if you start a blog on your website, using software likeWordPress or Typepad you can generate more traffic.

6. Shop windows

If you are holding a local event, many shops will be quite happy to put up a small A4 poster in their window. Many websites have events pages that do not charge to promote an event.

7. Free directory websites

The first place to go when starting a business is free classifieds. If you write an effective ad, it will make you successful at your business. You do not have to pay tons of money to get viewers to click on your ad. A creative and flamboyant ad will get you the clicks and sales that you desire to gain an overwhelming amount of income. Working from home can be very frustrating and feel like you are on a one way street. You get confused, don't where to go, and don't know how to get started. You think you are doing it right, but find out that all that hard work and time was wasted. Making mistakes is good, because you learn from them. You can fix what is not working and look back to make it better and more productive.

8. Stage a Publicity stunt.

Nothing is quite so powerful as a publicity stunt that seizes the public's attention. A publicity stunt is a planned event designed to attract the public's attention to the event's organizers or their cause. Publicity stunts can be professionally organized or set up by amateurs. Such events are frequently utilised by advertisers, celebrities, athletes, and politicians.Organisat ions sometimes seek publicity by staging newsworthy events that attract media coverage. They can be in the form of groundbreakings, dedications, press conferences or organised protests. By staging and managing the event, the organisation attempts to gain some control over what is reported in the media. Successful publicity stunts have news value, offer photo, video and sound bite opportunities, and are arranged primarily for media coverage.

9. Link swapping

Link swapping has gone a bit out of fashion of late, but it can present a very useful way to get traffic to your website. The free willy-nilly swapping of links was very popular a few years ago, but in the right circumstances it can prove very popular. The best way to go about doing this is to find out who is linking in to your competitors’ websites and ask if they will link back to you.

10. Generate reference material for your website

Another useful way to bring people to your website is to write useful reference material such as free how to guides.

One company that is using this to great effect is the hospital company BUPA. They wrote a number of health factsheets that they claim now have one million people a month visiting. While this has taken them quite a bit of effort to generate it is one of the best examples of free advertising that I can think about. And much cheaper than advertising on TV.

11.Email Signatures: Be sure to add your URL to all of your outgoing email. Try adding your mission statement, or a catchy phrase to help people understand what you do. Change it a several times a year so people notice it again.
