You don't like what you don't understand

I am an American retired military, still work, son in second year of university. Found someone who can tell me more about a culture that is different from mine. She is from Nigeria and she is absolutely wonderful. Why didn't anyone ever tell me about her twenty years ago? My background is German, English and maybe some Russian.
