I. JUNIOR SCIENTISTS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM (JSF)
The JSF program supports research in forest science and related areas. External reviewers and the Technical Committee review the applications. The AFORNET Board makes the final decision on the applications.
Eligibility
The grants are open to promising African scientists affiliated to training and research institutions in Africa who have shown the potential to undertake creative and innovative research in forestry in Africa, whether individually or as a team. Potential applicants include:
Active researchers in forestry science and related areas;
Post-doctoral or graduate researchers, including post graduate students
registered abroad, but intending to undertake field research in Africa; and
Graduates intending to undertake research for a higher professional qualification.
Applicants to the Junior Scientists†™ Fellowship Program should not be over 40 years at the time of application.
Grant terms
Grants are awarded for up to three years and occasionally renewed only once. Project budget may include scientific equipment, travel and per diem for field studies, payment to data collection personnel, communication, participation in workshops and meetings, purchase of key books and other publications, and costs for publishing and sharing of information, but should not include stipends, salaries, and maintenance of four wheel-drives nor travels outside Africa.
The total grant per applicant in the Young Scientists†™ Fellowship Program shall not exceed USD 8,000.
How to apply
Grant application form is available in English and French (both in electronic form and hard copy) from the AFORNET secretariat, the Nodal Coordinator for your eco-region, or the AFORNET web site.
The application form should be submitted with the following supporting documents:
Applicants†™ CV, a current health certificate and a letter(s) from a collaborator(s) or a supervisor(s), as applicable;
Institutional affiliation: current (and proposed, if applicable);
Evidence of registration for a mastersâ€â� ��¢ degree or PhD for graduate students;
In addition to the above, a research proposal, either in English or French, and not exceeding 10 pages should be submitted. The project proposal must include: title, name, address, and institution of the researcher, and collaborators/supervi sors (as applicable), one paragraph summary, background or introductory part (that justifies the study), literature review, goals or objectives of the study, expected output, methodology for data collection and analysis, work plan, and budget (detailing request from AFORNET and costs that would be borne from other sources) among others.
Deadlines
The closing dates for submission of applications and proposals are 31st March and 30th September of each year.
