In Umuosiegbo village, Umunya, located in the Oyi local government area of Anambra State, Mrs. Mmesoma Odili finds herself engulfed in sorrow after suffering the loss of her pregnancy during eight days of detention at the Zone 13 Police Headquarters in Ukpo, Anambra State.

The heartbreaking ordeal began when the police, unable to apprehend her husband over a land dispute in the area, resorted to arresting Mmesoma instead.

Speaking on the matter, Mr. Jude Ikeanyionwu, an indigene of the community, highlighted the dire consequences of the ongoing land dispute, which has deeply divided the area. He appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo and other stakeholders to intervene before the situation escalates further.

"Mmesoma's husband, a member of the community's vigilante group, stood against the unlawful attempt to sell our communal land by some elders," Ikeanyionwu explained. "When the police from Zone 13 arrived to arrest those opposing the land sale and couldn't find Mmesoma's husband, they detained his pregnant wife instead."

He continued, "After eight agonizing days in custody, Mmesoma suffered a miscarriage, losing her three-month pregnancy. The police released her only when her health was deteriorating rapidly."

Ikeanyionwu further described the ongoing harassment faced by the villagers, noting that the fear of arrest has driven many men to abandon their homes at night. He emphasized the significance of the communal land, which was divided among families to ensure equitable ownership.

"It's disheartening that despite the land being shared among families, some individuals persist in trying to sell it forcefully," Ikeanyionwu lamented. "We urge our leaders to uphold justice and protect our communal heritage, as we have no other land to call our own."
