In a recent operation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the dismantling of an international drug syndicate with extensive networks spanning Nigeria, South Africa, and Thailand.

According to the NDLEA, the crackdown resulted in the arrest of five members of the cartel across Lagos, Abia, and Anambra states. The arrests followed the interception of illicit drug shipments at the NAHCO import shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos.

The agency revealed that the unraveling of the drug cartel commenced on April 20th when four large suitcases arrived at the NAHCO shed via an Air Peace airline flight from Johannesburg, South Africa. Subsequently, Umeh Chisom Peter was apprehended on April 24th while attempting to collect two of the suitcases, which contained a synthetic strain of cannabis known as Loud, belonging to Thailand-based syndicate member Obum Michael.

Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA's Director of Media and Advocacy, disclosed these details in a statement issued on Sunday. He noted that the illicit drugs, weighing a total of 17.6 kilograms, were concealed in false bottoms of the suitcases, along with drug candies.

Further investigations led to the arrest of Mrs. Chiwendu Uche Ugbe in Anambra state on April 27th. Mrs. Ugbe was attempting to collect drug parcels sent by her husband, Aloytus Uche Ugbe, from South Africa. Additionally, two other suspects, Onyejakor Francis Chimezie and Naaji Valentine Chukwukere, were apprehended in Lagos on April 29th for their ties to the syndicate.

The NDLEA's operation extended to Abia state, resulting in the arrest of Mrs. Chinazo Osigwe. Osigwe was intercepted while attempting to collect drug parcels sent by her husband, Osigwe Chidiebere Anthony, who operates from South Africa.
