Tragedy struck at the Oke Kura Correctional Facility in Ilorin, Kwara State, as a 63-year-old land agent, Alhaji Taye Hussein Abubakar, passed away on Friday morning after reportedly spending over four months in detention.

Abubakar's detention stemmed from his involvement in land disputes that led to legal proceedings. Despite being granted bail by the court, he was unable to appear for his scheduled hearing due to illness, resulting in his re-arrest and subsequent detention.

Expressing grievances against the judiciary and correctional authorities, a relative of the deceased accused them of neglect, alleging that Abubakar's deteriorating health condition was disregarded during his time in custody.

According to the relative, efforts to secure Abubakar's release on bail with suitable sureties were unsuccessful, leaving him languishing in prison without proper medical attention.

In response to the incident, Phillip Adegbulugbe, the spokesman for the correctional facility, confirmed Abubakar's death, attributing it to complications related to kidney problems. Adegbulugbe clarified that Abubakar was transferred to the General Hospital in Ilorin for medical treatment on Thursday evening, where he ultimately passed away the following morning.

Contrary to speculation, Adegbulugbe clarified that Abubakar did not die within the correctional facility premises but in the hospital while receiving treatment.

The tragic demise of Alhaji Taye Hussein Abubakar has reignited concerns about the treatment of detainees and the provision of adequate healthcare within Nigeria's correctional facilities, prompting calls for greater oversight and reforms to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
