Tensions flared in the Enugu Nanka community of Orumba North local government area in Anambra State as a customer physically assaulted personnel of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for disconnecting his electricity service due to unpaid bills.

During the incident last Saturday, Izuchukwu Ofojama allegedly attacked EEDC staff and damaged the company’s vehicle while they were on official duty in Enugwu-Nanka Community.

In a viral video seen by our correspondent, Izuchukwu vehemently opposed the disconnection of his lines by the EEDC staff. However, DISCO officials claimed that the building had been illegally consuming electricity without payment, and Izuchukwu failed to provide evidence of payment upon demand by the EEDC team.

According to the spokesman of EEDC, Emeka Ezeh, Izuchukwu became enraged after being disconnected and proceeded to assault the EEDC officials. He reportedly used a log of wood to smash the front and rear windshields of their vehicle, along with damaging the side mirrors. Additionally, he punctured the two rear tires of the vehicle with a screwdriver.

Ezeh further reported that the President General of Nanka community, Rev. Canon Ifeanyichukwu Ezeike, intervened to reconcile the situation. Ezeike condemned Izuchukwu's actions, describing them as unfortunate and unwarranted. He expressed the community's commitment to repairing the damages on the vehicle and settling the matter amicably.

The community leaders, accompanied by Izuchukwu's brother, visited the EEDC Ekwulobia District office to apologize and make amends for the incident. They were received by a team from EEDC Corporate Headquarters, led by the Head of Security, Mr. Frank Ejiofor, and the Head of Health, Safety & Environment, Dr. Francis Iwu, among others.

Frank Ejiofor emphasized that EEDC does not condone violence against its staff and urged customers to utilize established complaint redress channels to address grievances. He commended the community's condemnation of Izuchukwu's actions and reiterated the company's commitment to prosecuting anyone who assaults its staff on duty.

EEDC reiterated its respect for its customers and emphasized the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means without resorting to violence.
