In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, delved into the intricacies of state politics, shedding light on his impeachment, allegations of godfatherism, and the contentious issue of campaign vehicles.

Shaibu, who had previously accused Governor Godwin Obaseki of engineering his impeachment, revealed a stance of forgiveness and readiness to reconcile with the governor. Despite past grievances, Shaibu expressed a commitment to moving forward for the betterment of the state.

Addressing the controversy surrounding campaign vehicles in his possession, Shaibu clarified that the vehicles were not new but refurbished ones previously used by deputy governors. He emphasized his dedication to transparency and accountability during his tenure, dismissing allegations of impropriety.

"The vehicles they are referring to are the two Prado SUVs used by Lucky Imasuen as the deputy governor. The other Hilux was the one (Dr Pius) Odubu’s wife used, and the Land Cruiser was the one Odubu used," Shaibu explained.

He further elucidated, "I took all those vehicles to the mechanic who changed their engine and refurbished them. Those are the vehicles that they are telling me to return. So, you can see how heartless men can be. I got only one new vehicle in almost eight years that I served as the deputy governor of the state."

Shaibu underscored his commitment to activism and advocated for political leaders to prioritize the welfare of the people above all else. Criticizing the process of his impeachment, he highlighted breaches of the oath of office by Governor Obaseki and called for constitutional amendments to safeguard deputy governors from arbitrary impeachment.

The interview provided a glimpse into the complexities of Edo State politics and Shaibu's unwavering dedication to public service and accountability.

Someone used and returned it, and you used and refused to return it. Did you refurbish it with your personal money? Even at that, it is the state's property. Return it you thief.
