it was learnt from a reliable source that in a bank in the country, transactions in money transfer from Nigeria to countries abroad had reduced due to the economic meltdown. Some Nigerians living abroad had undergone shock in their finances and such could not cope except through interventions from well-wishers from Nigeria.

The source said that of recent, there were transfer of money from Nigeria to countries like the United Kingdom, United States, The Netherlands and Italy.

When asked why the trend had changed, the source said it was generally due to the meltdown which had affected the world economy, to which Nigerians living abroad were not immune.

Also, a middle-aged man, who has children in Canada and the United States, was asked how his children had been faring in the face of the “economic shock.” He said “I have helped them to cope by sending some stipends to them from here.

“My son in America called me recently that he was sacked at his place of work. When I asked him if he would come back to Nigeria to engage in some businesses, he said he could not leave the United States for Nigeria now.

“After a long discussion, he told me to send money to him so as to buy a car which he would use as taxi there. I had to send about N800,000 to him.

“At least, he is my son, he has to live,” the man said. Another Nigerian woman, a cloth dealer, who had a son in the United Kingdom, said: “I always travel abroad to see my son. Anytime I get there, I give him some money.

“What is the big deal there. Everyone knows the situation the whole world is in. There’s nothing strange in sending money to one’s children.

Well, l guess this fact will teach the young and old people living ln Nigeria to let of their desire to travel abroad knowing that the global economic recession ls every where and they'll benefit more staying here in Nigeria.
Engaging their selves in some petty business that would at least yield them some gains at the end of the day.

all dat money dat is being sent abroad is the result of the investment dose people have made in the lives of their family and friends in the past .... some of the money is actually money saved up in Naija as emergency funds ....

but yeah the economy is pretty awful !!

No matter the economic situation, Nigerians in the western world are still better than most Nigerians at home, at least they can afford 3 or even 5 square meals everyday, and it is what they wanted to eat not what is available, they ride nice cars, live in modern house with average basic amenities, up to date medicals, they can afford nice clothings and have access to better education and no unexpected death, through road accidents, robbery, sickness, murdered by the Police, Soldier, flogging by Airforce officer, Navy. or 419 they are at peace with themselves.

The problem is people at home are the one demanding from them what they cant afford, expecting them to be providers of their needs, with no breaks, whereas most of people living abroad even the citizens are wage earners, no short cut as with Nigeria, no embezzlement, everything is clear cut.
Even those who are millionares in Nigeria still collect cash from people abroad, how wicked and absord, so if people at home can live people abroad alone, and let them live their lives, there is no comparison with the two. Nigeria is only ok, if you have a godfather, and how many Nigerians can afford 3 square meal, only about 10% of the population.
PLEASE LEAVE PEOPLE ABROAD ALONE, AND U PEOPLE SHOULD ALSO THINK OF HOW TO HELP THEM NOT HOW THEY WILL HELP YOU EVERYTIME.

true@1ola, [/color] thank you for breaking it down for them. I lived in USA and I have my two jobs and still sending money home to the family and friends. All this talking that Nigerian are now sending money to overseas is crazing talk. Even people who lost their job due to the recession, still lived in the USA and getting free money from the government to meet up until they get another. I went to Nigeria just this past May with my family, you wouldn't believe what happened in the road that bypass benin city and the road from benin city to lagos. Many people died due to accidents and arm robbers where operation. The two weeks I lived in Nigeria was a punishment. No light, no feul, bad roads, crimes[/b], people wake up every morning sitting around with nothing to do etc.

If out family back in nigeria can depend on us that lived in overseas, where are they going to get money from to send to us over. Just because a few greedy politician sending money to their children in overseas does not mean nigerians sending money to their families in overseas. Even right now, USA recession is easy up and by the ending of this year, those who criticise the one that lived in over seas will bite their nails. Moreover, with the way things are right now in USA and elsewhere, thousands of people are stilling dieing to live nigeria.[/b][/b][/b]
