Enugu State was gripped by fear and panic as gunmen launched a deadly assault in the communities of Orba and Eha-Alumona, located in Udenu and Nsukka Local Government Areas, targeting security operatives from both the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Saturday.
This tragic incident occurred just a day after another brazen attack on Friday, where gunmen ambushed and killed two policemen who were conducting stop-and-search duties in the state capital, a mere stone's throw away from the Government House.
Sources reveal that the onslaught began at the Premier Junction in Eha-Alumona, Nsukka LG, before advancing to the Army checkpoint at Orba in Udenu LG around 4 pm. In the attack, four security personnel lost their lives, while others managed to escape, sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
In addition to the loss of lives, the assailants targeted and set ablaze a Hilux van belonging to Patrick Eze, the traditional ruler of Egali Amalla Community in Udenu LG, popularly known as Igwe Waziri. Miraculously, the monarch escaped unscathed despite being caught in the midst of the chaos. The gunmen also vandalized an FRSC van during the rampage.
Despite attempts to seek clarification from the state Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, he expressed unawareness of the incident and directed inquiries to the Police Public Relations Officer. However, efforts to reach the command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has reaffirmed the state government's commitment to utilizing all available resources to apprehend the perpetrators behind the recent attacks, reiterating his vow following the killing of two policemen on Friday.
