After spending two years in prison, Victory Tasie, a 23-year-old man accused of r*ping his 19-year-old girlfriend, has been discharged and acquitted by Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Ikeja S*xual Offences and Domestic Violence Court.

The judge ruled on a no-case submission filed by Tasie's counsel, Mrs Rukayat Owolabi, dated March 19, 2024, leading to his discharge and acquittal.

Justice Soladoye emphasized that the prosecution failed to meet the burden of proof required to establish the charge of defilement against Tasie. She highlighted that the alleged survivor, Tasie's girlfriend, testified that the encounter was consensual and that Tasie was her boyfriend.

"The witness called by the prosecution testified that Tasie was her boyfriend and that he did not r*pe her. She also stated that she was not a minor when she got pregnant for the defendant," the judge noted.

Considering the no-case submission, Justice Soladoye concluded, "The prosecution failed to prove the charge of defilement against the defendant. The defendant has no case to answer, and he is hereby discharged and acquitted."

The state government had accused Tasie of defiling the purported survivor, who was allegedly 16 years old at the time, according to the charge filed against him. However, during her testimony on November 8, 2023, the girlfriend clarified that she was 19 years old, not 16, when she became pregnant. She affirmed that Tasie did not r*pe her and that their relationship was consensual.

Tasie's acquittal marks the end of a legal battle that saw him incarcerated for two years based on allegations that were ultimately disproved in court.
