Time for a reality check... Please get proper nutrition information before you post nonsense that some people desperate for getting thinner will swallow whole. The best source is the USDA nutrition database - use it to search for hard data : http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

The foods you mentioned are mostly complex carbohydrates, some of them with some proteins. These are a good basic energy supply, and can be a good component of a balanced diet - but they won't make you less fat, especially if you eat more of them !

Lower energy intake, exercise regularily, eliminate junk food and spirits, control insuline response, elevate your metabolism by building muscle, eat fruits and vegetables instead of denser carbohydrates, reduce fat and sugar intake, favor complex carbohydrates, eat fish and white meat... There are a lot of measures that contribute to weight loss - and they are very well known... But there are no shortcuts.

A few years ago I could not take being fat anymore and I lost 30 pounds in four months  - anyone can do it, it just takes discipline. It is a long hard way, but the rewards are entirely worth it !

50 kilometers cycling on every week day, starvation rations small enough to go into ketosis (absolutely no carbohydrates allowed) - the diet is only proteins and some fats (white meat, cold water fish) with green vegetables (brocoli, green beans, salad leaves etc) and some vitamin pills to avoid deficiencies. Basically, you are starving and you exercise a lot. The proteins keep your body from eating its emergency protein reserves (muscle loss is a very bad idea if you want to get in shape - and it makes weight gain after the diet even more likely) and the exercice keeps growth hormone secretions high so that muscle maintainance continues in spite of the starvation. It is extremely tiring and extremely difficult psychologically when you need to fit with other people in social settings. But it works.

The weight loss part is actually the easy part. What comes next is the stabilization phase : you have to keep the good habits. I cycle or roller skate on average twenty kilometers a day, every day; I climb on average thirty five stories a day, I eat lots of fruits and vegatables, no junk food, little alcohol, little fat, almost never dessert... As a result I am now in extremely good shape - at the last 24 Hours roller skate race I ran 372 kilometers in a day.

Technically, it is not very difficult once you understand how the biology works and keep the USDA database handy for hard data. The difficulty is social : you have to learn to resist temptation and say no to people when they offer you food - especially difficult when you want to keep a social life. Imagine telling your mother that you are not hungry and don't want her food. Imagine telling your friends that you don't want to order a pizza with them. Imagine telling your colleagues that you are not going to have that beer with them. If you can't tell them all to get lost, you are not ready for this !

Thank you Jean. I commend you for that. I definitely cannot fit this regime into my day. I go to work early and close late. My weekends are a no go area. The diet... Yes but the exercise no. I simply don't have the time. I will bear it in mind though.

The problem is that if you only diet, you are going to lose muscle mass. This mean that your metabolism will slow and make weight rebound even more likely at the end of the weight loss period. In addition, losing muscle tone will definitely make you look worse.

The way I managed to fit all the sport in my working day is by using skates or bike as a mean of transportation for everyday commuting. It does not take more time than bus or subway - so from a planning point of view it is completely neutral.
