A devastating tanker explosion along the Eleme section of the East-West Road in Rivers State on Friday night has resulted in five confirmed fatalities and the destruction of more than 70 vehicles, reports The PUNCH.

Initial reports had indicated that at least four individuals were feared dead in the aftermath of the multiple explosions at the Eleme section of the East-West Road in Rivers State.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident unfolded when a petrol-laden tanker collided with a heavy-duty truck, causing a catastrophic spillage and subsequent ignition.

Baridi, an eyewitness, recounted the harrowing ordeal, explaining that the ensuing inferno engulfed numerous vehicles stranded on the Akpajo-Onne Road due to ongoing road construction, leaving some occupants unable to escape the flames.

Precious, a motorist caught in the chaos, described the scene as chaotic and horrific, with vehicles ablaze and people desperately fleeing the fire.

Blame for the tragedy was laid partly on the ongoing road reconstruction efforts, which exacerbated traffic congestion and contributed to the severity of the incident.

Confirming the casualty toll, Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the State Police Command, disclosed that five individuals had lost their lives in the disaster, with law enforcement personnel deployed to maintain order at the scene.

Rumors circulated that Governor Siminalayi Fubara would visit the site to assess the situation firsthand, with law enforcement agencies and emergency responders already on-site since the previous night.

Efforts to contain the blaze were spearheaded by a team of firefighters from Indorama Petrochemical Company and other private firms, who battled the flames for nearly two hours before gaining control.

This tragic incident recalls a similar catastrophe in March 2023 when 12 individuals perished in an explosion at a crude oil tapping point in Rumuekpe community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, underscoring the ongoing dangers posed by such incidents.
