A resurgence of violence in Ikachi village, Akparata, Effium, located in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, has resulted in the deaths of two individuals and the destruction of property worth millions of naira.

According to DAILY POST, the victims were beheaded, seven people were kidnapped, and five houses were completely burned down in the attack that occurred early Sunday morning.

In a statement issued in Abakaliki, Dr. James Agena, President General of the Effium community, alleged that the assailants were suspected Ezza warriors. He detailed, "At about 3 a.m. on Sunday, Ezza warriors attacked Ikachi village in Akparata, leading to the beheading of two men, the abduction of seven natives (five women and two men), and gunshot injuries sustained by twelve people. Five houses were also set ablaze."

The victims of the beheadings were identified as Obinna Aje, 19, and Ogenyi Abowu, 78. Dr. Agena noted that this recent attack follows a similar assault on Effium Urban on May 12, 2024, where Mrs. Cecelia Omah was killed and beheaded.

"This is an attack too many on the peace-loving people of Effium," Dr. Agena stated. He called on the Ebonyi State government and security agencies to arrest and prosecute those responsible for these violent acts.

The ongoing conflict, which began in 2021, has claimed numerous lives, displaced residents, and caused significant property damage. The violence continues despite the formation of a peace committee, which is set to present the government's White Paper on the Effium crisis on May 21, 2024.

Police spokesperson ASP Ukandu Joshua confirmed the attack and stated that an investigation is underway. He acknowledged the volatile nature of the Effium area, describing it as a war zone. Despite the presence of military detachments and two mobile police units, the area remains susceptible to violent outbreaks.

The community and authorities are urging for swift action to prevent further bloodshed and restore peace to the region.
