In a significant operation aimed at combating drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a staggering quantity of opioids in Lagos State.

The agency's operatives successfully thwarted the trafficking attempt, seizing three trailer loads of opioids comprising a total of 3,450,000 pills and 344,000 bottles of codeine syrup. The interception took place at Abule Ado in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos state.

According to NDLEA reports, the multi-billion naira consignments were clandestinely loaded into two 40-ft container trucks and another 20-ft truck at the AML bonded terminal, Abule-Osun, near the International Trade Fair complex. The contraband was then transported to a large warehouse in Abule-Ado, where NDLEA officers apprehended the suspects and recovered the opioid consignments on Thursday, May 9, 2024.

The operation resulted in the arrest of three individuals believed to be involved in the illicit drug trade. Among those apprehended are Cosmas Obiajulu, 51, the warehouse agent, Ridwan Balogun, 25, and Banjo Tayo, 30, who served as drivers for two of the trucks. A third driver managed to evade arrest by fleeing the scene.

Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, provided details of the seizure in a statement issued on Sunday, underscoring the agency's commitment to combatting drug trafficking and ensuring the safety and well-being of communities across Nigeria.
