In a groundbreaking move for the conservative kingdom, Saudi Arabia hosted its inaugural fashion show featuring swimsuit models, marking a significant departure from its traditionally strict dress codes.

The historic event, held on Friday as part of the Red Sea Fashion Week at the luxurious St Regis Red Sea Resort, showcased the designs of Moroccan fashion designer Yasmina Qanzal. The poolside runway displayed an array of elegant one-piece swimsuits in shades of red, beige, and blue, with models confidently flaunting exposed shoulders and partially visible midriffs.

Speaking to AFP, Qanzal expressed the significance of the occasion, stating, “When we came here, we understood that a swimsuit fashion show in Saudi Arabia is a historic moment, because it is the first time to have such an event.” She added that it was an honor to be part of this progressive step towards modernization.

The Red Sea Fashion Week is part of the ambitious Vision 2030 social and economic reform program spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The resort, situated off Saudi Arabia’s western coast, is part of the Red Sea Global project, aimed at transforming the kingdom's economy and promoting tourism.

Prince Mohammed has been instrumental in driving significant social reforms aimed at modernizing Saudi society and diversifying its economy. These reforms have included initiatives such as reintroducing cinemas, organizing mixed-gender music festivals, and relaxing stringent dress codes.

While these changes have been welcomed by many, they have also faced opposition from conservative quarters. However, attendees at the swimsuit fashion show hailed it as a progressive step towards openness and growth in the fashion and tourism sectors.

Shouq Mohammed, a Syrian fashion influencer present at the event, praised Saudi Arabia's efforts to embrace change, stating, “It’s the first time to have a swimsuit fashion show in Saudi Arabia, but why not? Seriously why not? It’s possible and we have it here.”

French influencer Raphael Simacourbe lauded the show's significance within the Saudi context, acknowledging the bravery of the organizers. “That’s very brave from them to do that today, so I am very happy to be part of it,” he remarked.

The historic swimsuit fashion show marks a pivotal moment in Saudi Arabia's journey towards modernization and cultural openness, signaling a shift towards greater acceptance of diverse forms of expression and attire.
