In a decisive move aimed at curbing the proliferation of counterfeit and substandard products, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken swift action to close down an illicit alcohol factory situated in Badagry, Lagos State.

According to a statement released on Sunday in Lagos by Sayo Akintola, the Resident Media Consultant for NAFDAC, the agency's enforcement team, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army 15 Field Engineering Regiment in Badagry, successfully shut down the illegal operation.

The factory, allegedly owned by Mr. Chinedu Okafor, a suspected illegal drinks manufacturer, was reportedly operating clandestinely from his residence at No. O24, MTN Road, Badagry. Akintola disclosed that the Nigerian Army's attention was drawn to Okafor's suspicious activities, leading to his subsequent arrest and handover to NAFDAC officers at the Ports Inspection Directorate, Seme Border.

Following an inspection of the premises, NAFDAC officers confiscated all equipment and materials used in the production of illicit drinks, effectively shutting down the illegal factory. Investigations revealed Okafor's extensive involvement in criminal activities, compromising the quality of regulated alcohol drinks in the area.

Akintola emphasized NAFDAC's commitment to prosecuting the suspect, underlining the importance of public vigilance in safeguarding public health. The agency warned against the consumption of adulterated alcohol, highlighting the grave health risks associated with such products, including kidney and liver failure, and even death.

As part of efforts to combat the menace of counterfeit products, Akintola urged Nigerians to consider the "4 Ps" (Place, Price, Packaging, Product) before purchasing any alcoholic beverage, emphasizing the importance of scrutinizing branded drinks to distinguish them from counterfeits.

Citing alarming statistics from global health organizations, Akintola underscored the urgency of the situation, urging continued vigilance and reporting of suspicious activities to NAFDAC offices nationwide. He assured the public of NAFDAC's unwavering commitment to ensuring the availability of safe and healthy products across the country.
