In a collaborative effort between officers stationed at the Oji-River Police Division and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, two suspects, Akabue Favour and Obayi Chiemezie, have been apprehended for their alleged involvement in armed robbery.
The suspects, both residents of Trans-Ekulu, Enugu, were arrested following reports of an armed robbery incident in the Achi community of Oji-River Local Government Area. According to Police Public Relations Officer Daniel Ndukwe, the suspects allegedly used toy guns to forcibly take a vehicle from a man, robbing him of his cash, handset, and other belongings.
Ndukwe disclosed that upon their arrest, law enforcement recovered one locally fabricated Beretta-like pistol, two imitation revolver pistols, a syringe containing a liquid substance suspected to be acid, and other exhibits from the suspects.
The arrests were made following a report from a tricyclist who claimed to have been robbed by a gang of armed robbers on May 6, 2024, while en route to Garriki, Awkunanaw, Enugu. The victim identified one of the suspects as a member of the gang responsible for the robbery.
In a separate incident on May 3, 2024, operatives in Oji-River Police Division, in collaboration with the Neighbourhood Watch Group, apprehended Akabue Favour and Obayi Chiemezie. The duo was allegedly involved in another armed robbery, using toy guns to steal a Honda car from a male victim in Amaetiti-Akwu.
Despite attempts to escape, the suspects were captured after a chase, during which their vehicle skidded off the road into the bush.
“All the suspects shall be arraigned and prosecuted once discreet investigations into the cases are concluded,” Ndukwe assured.
