In a recent legal verdict that has stirred controversy and sparked debate on human rights, a middle-aged man identified as Abdullahi Sani, hailing from Unguwar Makara Huta, has been condemned to death by stoning by a Sharia Court in Ningi, Bauchi State.

The judgment was pronounced by Sharia Judge Abdullahi Aliyu Doya during a court session held on May 10, 2024. Sani was charged with alleged homosegxwality, and after a thorough hearing spanning several days, he was found guilty of the offence.

According to the Sharia Judge, the court deliberated on the case from May 2, 2024, until its conclusion on Thursday, May 9, 2024. Following the presentation of witness testimonies and the defendant's own admission of guilt, Abdullahi Sani was deemed culpable and sentenced to death by stoning.

The verdict is grounded in the provisions of sections 131, 132, and 133 of the Bauchi State Administration of Criminal Justice, 2001, which prescribe severe penalties for acts deemed to contravene Sharia law.

This sentencing echoes a similar ruling handed down by the same court previously. On July 1, 2022, three individuals were also sentenced to death by stoning for offenses related to homosegxwality, further emphasizing the strict enforcement of Sharia law in Bauchi State.

The decision has reignited discussions regarding the compatibility of traditional religious laws with modern human rights principles, particularly concerning issues of segxwal orientation and individual freedoms.
