In a recent legal development, the Gombe State High Court has handed down a verdict, convicting and sentencing one George Habu Nuhu to six months imprisonment for his involvement in fraudulent activities.

The case, prosecuted by the Gombe Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), centered on a one-count charge of intent to defraud against Nuhu.

According to court documents, Nuhu was accused of defrauding Shehu Makama of the sum of N7,678,000 (Seven Million, Six Hundred and Seventy-eight Thousand Naira) between March 2018 and November 2019. The charge alleged that Nuhu claimed the money was payment for the purchase of "madrid timber log," thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 320 of the Penal Code Law and punishable under Section 322 of the same Law.

Upon the reading of the charge, Nuhu pleaded "guilty," prompting the prosecution counsel, S.E. Okemini, to urge the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.

During the proceedings, the defence counsel, Yusuf A. Ali, pleaded for leniency on behalf of the defendant, asking the court to temper justice with mercy.

In delivering the judgment, Justice J.A. Kereng sentenced Nuhu to six months imprisonment with an option of a fine of N60,000 (Sixty Thousand Naira).

Additionally, the judge ordered Nuhu to restitute the sum of N7,678,000 (Seven Million, Six Hundred and Seventy-eight Thousand Naira) to his victim within six months, commencing from May 2024.

The verdict highlights the commitment of the judiciary to combat financial crimes and uphold justice in the society.
