A moment of drama unfolded during a session at the National Assembly as power supply was abruptly cut off while the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, addressed lawmakers during an investigative hearing on Monday.

The incident occurred as Adelabu fielded questions from members of the Senate Committee on Power regarding the escalating electricity prices. However, the disruption was short-lived as power was swiftly restored within five minutes.

Reflecting on the interruption, Eyinnaya Abaribe, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Power, expressed concerns over the stability of electricity in the country, emphasizing the shared experience of power challenges among Senators and even the President.

Meanwhile, recent developments in electricity pricing have stirred controversy, with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approving a significant tariff increase of 340% for customers classified under Band A.

According to Musliu Oseni, Vice Chairman of NERC, customers in Band A, who receive 20 hours of electricity supply daily, will now be charged N225 per kilowatt hour, a stark increase from the previous rate of N66. Notably, Band A customers represent 15% of Nigeria's total 12 million electricity consumers.

However, customers in other bands will remain unaffected by the tariff revision, as clarified by regulatory authorities.

In response to the contentious tariff hike, the Senate has summoned the Minister of Power to provide explanations and rationale behind the decision, signaling a push for accountability and transparency in Nigeria's energy sector.
