Jacob Alonge, a 58-year-old fugitive who had fled from the Benin Correctional Centre during the 2020 #EndSARS protests, has been apprehended by the Edo State Police.

Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, announced the recapture of Alonge during a briefing with journalists in Benin City.

According to CP Adegboye, Alonge had been serving a 21-year prison sentence for the rape of his daughter, Gift Alonge, as handed down by the Edo High Court. Despite threats to derail the case, Alonge was convicted, albeit mysteriously, as the witnesses against him passed away under suspicious circumstances.

Escaping during the chaos of the #EndSARS protests, Alonge managed to evade recapture until recently when he was sighted in the Ososo community of Akoko-Edo local government area.

Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives raided the community to apprehend him. Despite resistance from some residents, the operatives successfully re-arrested Alonge and brought him back to custody.

Describing Alonge as a dangerous individual unfit to live among society, CP Adegboye emphasized the importance of community cooperation in combating crime. He urged residents not to shield criminals, reminding them that criminals could become their victims in the future.

In an interview with journalists, Alonge admitted to escaping during the #EndSARS protests, stating that he had fled to his village. However, upon learning that the police were searching for him, he surrendered himself and was subsequently arrested.

The recapture of Jacob Alonge serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to bring escaped criminals to justice and ensure the safety of communities in Edo State.
