For Mr. Fidelis Dana, an indigene of Qua’an Pan Local Government Area, Plateau State, his burden is his 14-year-old missing daughter, Cecilia. He wants Nigerians, particularly, the security agencies, to assist him to find her.
When Dana visited the Abuja office of The Sun, he unmasked his discomfort: “Presently, I am not doing anything because I lost my job in November, 2010. I was an accountant with Integrated Aluminum, Wuse 2, Abuja, and later, AB Construction, a private construction company. We thank God that I can still come out, go to places and get something to live on.” He has four children, a boy and three girls. It is one of the girls, Cecelia, that has brought untold grief to the family since April 19, 2011. Dana, a resident of Tunga Maje, a suburb of Abuja, recalled how it all started:“That morning, I went out as normal in search of daily bread. Usually, she would go out just the way she did recently when things were somehow difficult for us. She went back to Jos to live with my family and she just came back and was about being registered back in school.
“She came back not quite long and she has been going out on errand but that fateful day, my family complained when I returned in the evening that she went out in the morning and that she has not returned. I was worried on what could have happened.“I didn’t suspect anything. Everything was just ok.” When asked if he suspected anyone to have been behind the incident of his missing daughter, maybe for the purpose of ritual. Dana said he was “scared of the ritual aspect because I know of somebody who complained recently that her son was missing. I don’t know if they have succeeded in getting the boy back.
“It is more than a month. The day it happened, having waited and did not see her, I lodged a complaint at the Zuba Police Station that night. The Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) was aware of the incident. They said that we should come back and I went back the second day and we have been going. If you get to the station, you will see her picture pasted outside but the thing is that I have not gotten any concrete answer since then. If you go today, they will say ok, we are working on it, come tomorrow, we are working on it.”
Dana said he cannot tell if the police was actually doing its job to unravel the circumstances surrounding the sudden disappearance of Cecilia: “I cannot tell because I am not there with them. It is what they tell me that I hear, but I feel that things are not going the way they should.”
Dana had equally consulted his pastor for spiritual assistance over his missing daughter “Even if somebody is late, with time, you will know that this person is gone. When somebody is missing, you will continue to remember the incident for the rest of your life. The most painful thing is that the mother is falling ill now.” Efforts to reach the Divisional Police Officer, Zuba, through the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Jimoh Moshood, to comment on the incident, proved abortive as Moshood did not answer calls put across to his mobile phone.
