In a recent development, the Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought four suspects before Justice A.A Bello of the Kaduna State High Court on charges of obstruction of lawful duty and assault against EFCC officers.

According to a statement released by the commission on Saturday, April 27, 2024, the suspects—identified as Rukayya Ahmed Mustapha, Sadiya Usman Mohammed, Ameera Uthman, and Nafisat Usman—were arraigned on Wednesday, each facing one-count separate charges related to obstruction of lawful duty.

The charge against Sadiya Usman Mohammed alleges that she "willfully obstructed officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) while carrying out an official assignment (effecting a lawful arrest at No. 13 Jafar Organizer Street, Rigachukun, Kaduna)" on April 15, 2024, contravening Section 38(2)(a) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2004.

During the proceedings, all four suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges, prompting the prosecution counsel, K.S Ogunlade, to request a trial date and seek the remand of the defendants. Justice Bello, after considering the arguments from both sides, remanded three of the suspects at the Kaduna Correctional Centre, while Sadiya Usman Mohammed, who is a nursing mother, was remanded in EFCC custody. The case was adjourned to May 2, 2024, for the hearing of bail applications.

The suspects were apprehended for obstructing EFCC officers in their attempt to arrest Hadiza Usman, who had repeatedly evaded arrest after jumping bail. In the process of apprehending Hadiza, the four suspects allegedly launched a physical assault on EFCC operatives, with one operative reportedly bitten on the collarbone and another on the left hand.

Despite the resistance encountered, EFCC officers managed to maintain composure and professionalism, successfully apprehending the suspects without resorting to violence.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in the discharge of their duties and underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law in the face of adversity.
