Tragedy struck on Friday night in the Surulere area of Lagos State as a tanker explosion claimed the lives of two individuals at the Ijesha end of the Cele link-bridge.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) Director, Margaret Adeseye, firefighters promptly responded to the distress call and worked swiftly to extinguish the fire.

Adeseye disclosed in a statement on Saturday that the incident occurred around 23:12hrs when a tanker truck carrying 33,000 litres of petrol lost control while navigating the roundabout to ascend the bridge. The spillage ignited into a large fire, engulfing the surrounding area.

"Prompt action by the Isolo and Bolade Fire Stations of the agency contained the inferno, preventing further escalation," the statement read.

Unfortunately, two male individuals were found deceased, their bodies tragically burnt beyond recognition. The bodies were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for necessary procedures. The Lagos State Ambulance Service provided vital assistance throughout the operation.

Efforts are currently underway to clear the wreckage of the involved vehicles from the road to ensure the free flow of traffic and facilitate investigative procedures.

This incident follows a similar tragedy reported in April by PUNCH Online, where five people were confirmed dead and over 70 cars burnt in a tanker explosion at the Eleme section of the East-West Road in Rivers State. The explosion occurred following a collision between a petrol-laden tanker and a heavy-duty truck, resulting in the spillage of the tanker's contents which ignited into flames.
