The Kwara State Police Command has launched a discreet investigation into the mysterious disappearance of an umbilical cord and placenta at the Government Cottage Hospital in Iloffa, Oke-Ero Local Government Area. The incident, involving a newborn baby, occurred last Sunday and has since sparked significant concern and controversy.

Mrs. C. B. A. Williams, a teacher at Orota Secondary School in Odo-Owa, gave birth to her baby on Sunday night. However, by the time of this report, the hospital staff had yet to return the umbilical cord and placenta to her.

The police have detained five health workers from the hospital as suspects. These include Dr. Ajibola, a resident doctor, and nurses Rukayat Adeloye, Aishat Awolusi, and Peace Alabi, along with ward attendant Toyin Adewumi. They were taken into custody by the General Investigation Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department in Ilorin following an interrogation on Thursday afternoon.

Sources indicate that the police involvement came after attempts to resolve the matter within the local government hierarchy failed. The incident nearly led to unrest, as angry youths from the Odo-Owa community, suspecting foul play, were on the verge of burning down the hospital on Tuesday. It took considerable effort from community elders to calm the situation.

Mrs. Williams recounted her ordeal, explaining that she arrived at the hospital on Sunday afternoon experiencing labor pains. "I was feeling labor pains on Sunday and arrived at the Cottage Hospital shortly after 1 pm. Nurse Adeloye, who was on duty, confirmed I was in labor and took me to the labor room," she narrated. "Dr. Ajibola later arrived and instructed Nurse Adeloye to usher me in."

During the delivery, which occurred around 7 pm, Nurse Alabi assisted, with Nurse Adeloye and Ward Attendant Toyin present. Mrs. Williams stayed overnight and was discharged the following morning. However, upon returning home, she discovered that the umbilical cord and placenta were missing from the items handed to her by the hospital staff. "Though they gave me a black nylon bag containing my personal items, the umbilical cord and placenta were not inside," she said.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer Ejire-Adeyemi Toun confirmed the incident and stated that the investigation is ongoing. The hospital and the police are working to uncover the circumstances surrounding the missing items, which has drawn significant public attention and concern.
